Rebekka Karijord’s seventh solo album returns to her lifelong fascination with the human voice, and is one of her most ambitious projects to date: an ode to a planet in peril, a letter from a mother to her children, and a meditation on our place within the natural world.
Working with the voice research department at Stockholm University, she recorded 25 singers from around the world on custom-built contact microphones and turned their voices into a unique sample instrument. She then scored parts for the American vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth and set Joanna Macy’s translations of Rainer Maria Rilke to music. The album takes its title from Rilke’s poem “Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower.”
Made from voice alone, it is the first of her solo albums that Rebekka has produced entirely herself.
